Stargazers, be prepared for a special treat on New Years Eve!

The night of December 31st, 2009 will see its 13th full moon of the year, also known as a Blue Moon.

While there are usually only 12 full moons in a calendar year, 2009 marks the first year with 13 full moons since 1990 and it won’t happen again until 2028!

And for all of you residing in Europe and Asia, you’ll be privy to a partial lunar eclipse on the 31st as well. The eclipse is said to take place at 7:23 pm (GMT) when “the moon will pass partly into shadow” by the earth itself.

Get out your telescopes!
