John Stewart’s Rally, ‘The Walking Dead’ And ‘Rocky Horror’ On ‘Glee’ In Today’s Twitter-Wood

Glee Rocky HorrorMichael Ian Black refuses to perform at John Stewart’s Rally to Restore Sanity this week, but he’s got a good reason, and if you’ve been following his Twitter account you know what that is.

Meanwhile, the NBA tweets have been in full swing with the new season officially kicked off. Danny Pudi was all about it yesterday, while Marlon Wayans sounded worried about the Miami Heat. While the NBA is a popular topic in Twitter-Wood, it still may not have been as popular as AMC’s “The Walking Dead”; Carlton Cuse and Eric Appel checked out the premiere last night and posted their thoughts. You’ll find them after the jump along with Brian Lynch’s concerns about last night’s “Glee” episode.

I’m @brianwarmoth, and this is Twitter-Wood for October 27, 2010.

@michaelianblack Main reason I refuse to perform at Jon Stewart’s rally this weekend: I was not asked to.
-Michael Ian Black, Writer/Actor (”Run Fatboy Run,” “Wet Hot American Summer”)

@StephenAtHome I’m concerned about all this anonymous corporate spending. That’s money that should be spent on advertising during my show
-Stephen Colbert, Actor/Writer (”The Colbert Report,” “Monsters vs Aliens”)

@MARLONLWAYANS I’ve seen white people on coke dancing to hard core hip hop more in sync than the miami heat
-Marlon Wayans, Writer/Actor (”G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra,” “Little Man”)

@dannypudi NBA hoops are back! And the World Series is here! I hope to be jumping and saying ’snap’ many times tonight. http://plixi.com/p/53085700
-Danny Pudi, Actor (”Community,” “Road Trip: Beer Pong”)

@BrianLynch Looking forward to the ROCKY HORROR episode of GLEE. Now that I’ve admitted this, am I allowed to serve in the military?
-Brian Lynch, Writer/Director (”Puss in Boots,” “Big Helium Dog”)

@CarltonCuse Congratulations to my pal Gale Anne Hurd (@GunnerGale). While not for the faint of heart, “The Walking Dead” is awesome.
-Carlton Cuse, Writer/Producer (”Lost,” “Nash Bridges”)

@erockappel Holy s–t! Just went to The Walking Dead premiere! Best show ever! I mean so so so f—ing good. Like no other tv show!

‘Tron: Legacy’’s Daft Punk Trailer/Music Video Reminds Us Of Some Other Awesome Movie Soundtracks

Has there ever been a more perfect match for a movie soundtrack than Daft Punk and “Tron: Legacy“? Certainly there are few collaborative efforts that have received as much fan excitement as this one. Daft Punk is going to be involved in a good portion of the “Tron: Legacy” promotional efforts as the days tick down until the film’s December 17 release, and that explains why the latest trailer is really a music video for one of the 24 songs on the “Tron: Legacy” soundtrack, “Derezzed.”

The only new scene in the trailer is a shot of the Daft Punk duo, Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter, in their cameo as disc jockeys at a nightclub within the digital world. And those costumes that they’re wearing aren’t even costumes, but just the typical outfits that Daft Punk wear during all their performances. So, has there ever been a soundtrack and film so perfectly matched for one another? Check out a handful of our recent favorites after the jump!

“The Social Network”
Just recently, Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor teamed up with his frequent collaborator Atticus Ross to score “The Social Network,” and while on the surface it might seem like a strange match the result was so freaking perfect. With “The Social Network” building some serious Oscar buzz, it seems likely that Reznor and Ross will get some Academy recognition for their work.

“Where The Wild Things Are”
Spike Jonze’s “Where The Wild Things Are” wasn’t the runaway hit we thought it would be, but the Yeah Yeah Yeah’s Karen O collaboration with Carter Burwell for the soundtrack definitely struck a chord with audiences. Karen O was nominated for a Grammy in 2010 for “All Is Love,” but it’s still the Arcade Fire song “Wake Up” (used in the film’s first trailer) that reminds us of letting the wild rumpus begin.

“Resident Evil”
Yes, this series is going to keep going and going and going, but the first film was definitely the best largely because Marilyn Manson composed the soundtrack. It might not have been the most musical soundtrack ever made, but it was perfectly appropriate for a horror zombie flick, and definitely made “Resident Evil” much better than it would have been otherwise.

“Away We Go”
Scottish filmmaker Alexi Murdoch has made a lot of music for film and television in the past, but his soundtrack for Sam Mendes‘ “Away We Go” is definitely a high point. The soundtrack includes some songs from Bob Dylan, George Harrison, The Stranglers and The Velvet Underground, but it’s Murdoch’s voice that gives the film some serious emotional gravity.

“The Twilight Saga”
Dozens of musicians and bands — Death Cab for Cutie, Muse, Vampire Weekend and Band of Horses, to name a few) have contributed to making the three “Twilight Saga” soundtracks some of the best-selling CDs in recent years. By creating unique songs (Death Cab’s “Meet Me on the Equinox” is a personal fave) for the films, they’ve also given the vampire flicks a special indie vibe. Plus, any franchise that can get Robert Pattinson to record two songs for the first soundtrack is a win in our books.

What is your favorite movie soundtrack?

Tom Cruise’s Maverick Would Be The Star Of ‘Top Gun 2,’ Says Screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie

Tom Cruise in Top GunWhen MTV News heard that director Tony Scott, producer Jerry Bruckheimer and “Usual Suspects” screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie were speeding down the highway to the danger zone for a sequel to 1986’s “Top Gun,” we nearly wet our Naval aviator jumpsuits with joy. Of course, our enthusiasm for “Top Gun 2″ wasn’t quite unbridled because Tom Cruise was reportedly only going to appear in a small supporting role, presumably making way for a new crop of cocky pilots to take steam baths together, make slow sweet love to Kelly McGillis, and play volleyball whilst listening to Kenny Loggins’ “Playin’ With the Boys.”

Well, you can go ahead and take that bridle right off your enthusiasm… because McQuarrie sent an email to Vulture (which broke the sequel news a couple weeks back) to deliver this brief but powerful message: “There is no ‘Top Gun 2′ in which Maverick is not the starring role.”

In other words, Tom Cruise will be the star! Or will he? In his brevity, McQuarrie left a whole lot open to interpretation. Does he mean that Cruise and his speed-needing alter-ego Maverick will indeed headline the sequel? Or is he subtly implying that there won’t “Top Gun 2″ unless Cruise signs on for the lead role? Or — and this is seriously doubtful — is McQuarrie saying that the main role will be Maverick but leaving the door open for someone else to portray the character?

“Top Gun” fans are no doubt rooting for the first option, though it doesn’t exactly jibe with what Tony Scott has been saying about the film, which is that it will focus on a new generation of pilots who fly unmanned planes from afar. “I’m not waiting for a script,” he told Hit Fix at the junket for “Unstoppable.” I’m going to do my homework. I’m going down to I think it’s Fallon, Nevada, down near New Mexico and it’s a whole different world now. These computer geeks — these kids play war games in a trailer in Fallon, Nevada, and if we ever went to war or were in the Middle East or the Far East or wherever it is, these guys can actually fly drones. They are unmanned aircraft. They operate them and then they party all night.”

Sure, Cruise’s Maverick could play some sort of role in that universe — but we’re having a hard time imaging how remote-controlled aerial combat is going to be quite as dramatic as flipping an enemy MIG the bird (a.k.a. “keeping up foreign relations) at a distance of two meters. In either event, Scott has kept mum on Cruise’s involvement in the film, so perhaps he’s known all along that McQuarrie intended to make Maverick the sequel’s central character. Whether or not that’s the case, now that McQuarrie’s floated the idea, we’re having a hard time imagining it any other way.

Should Tom Cruise’s Maverick be the central character in “Top Gun 2″? Tell us in the comments!

‘The Hobbit’ Is Filming In New Zealand, And Everyone Is FINALLY Happy

Peter JacksonThere’s been so much hemming and hawing about “The Hobbit” production that we’ve almost lost track of which group is angry over what. But finally — finally — it seems like all the anger and wordplay is over with, as New Zealand Prime Minister John Key announced last night via a live press conference that an agreement has been reached between Warner Bros. and the New Zealand government… and “The Hobbit” will be staying in N.Z.

“I am delighted we have achieved this result,” Key said. “Making the two Hobbit movies here will not only safeguard work for thousands of New Zealanders, but it will also follow the success of the ‘Lord of the Rings’ trilogy in once again promoting N.Z. on the world stage.”

So let’s recap: Peter Jackson is directing, Martin Freeman is starring as Bilbo Baggins, and the movies are being filmed in New Zealand. After seven years and a lot of doubts, everything actually finally came together!

What did it ultimately take to convince Warner Bros. to keep “The Hobbit” production on New Zealand shores? Key said that lawmakers will be introducing legislation tomorrow to “clarify the distinction between independent contractors and employees as it relates to the film production industry,” therefore (hopefully) resolving the conflicts New Zealand actors, who work as independent contractors, had with wages and work standards. So there’s that… and the fact that the N.Z. government will also stake Warner Bros. up to $25 million. The studio could see up to $15 million in rebates because the government has agreed to broaden of the criteria for its big-budget-movie incentives program. And, thanks to a “long-term strategic partnership” between WB and New Zealand to help foster tourism, the government will cover about $10 mil of the studio’s marketing costs.

That means production is gearing up to go, and the films are set to start shooting early next year. Andy Serkis and Ian McKellen still aren’t officially on board, but we can assume that now that everything’s straightened out we’ll be hearing “confirmed” next to their names pretty shortly.

“It’s good to have the uncertainty over, and to have everyone now full steam ahead on this project,” Key said. Uh, yeah, we definitely agree.

Christopher Nolan reveals the “Batman 3″ title, James Cameron commits to making “Avatar 2″ and “3″ as his next films, and “The Hobbit” returns to New Zealand: Could today be any better for the film industry? Tell us your thoughts on all of this in the comments!

Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ May Get The Movie Treatment, Courtesy Of Kenny Ortega

Michael Jackson in ThrillerWill the greatest music video of all time make for one of the greatest movies of all time? We may soon find out. According to Deadline, “This Is It” and “High School Musical” director Kenny Ortega is looking to direct a film based on Michael Jackson’s famous music video “Thriller.”

Several studios including Fox 2000, Mandate/Lionsgate and Summit Entertainment are looking to pick up the project, which is being budgeted at around $50 million, but further negotiations are waiting on a deal to be completed with Jackson’s estate.

The script will be written by “The Hangover“’s Jeremy Garelick (interesting choice), and is said to follow the basic folklore of the music video “involving Vincent Price and the town he grew up in.” It’s also unclear whether the film will be a musical, though Ortega’s involvement would seem to suggest that this is indeed the case.

In addition, Ortega technically has horror roots (if you consider “Hocus Pocus” horror, which is iffy), and as long as his pitch is right can probably convince John Landis to come on board and help out with the project. The bigger question is what exactly the “song’s folklore” entails. Presumably, it will be the plot of Price’s fake film “Thriller” from the music video and not the zombie dance off on that deserted street, but who would really complain either way?

Another big question is whether Ortega would style the film’s leading man after Michael Jackson, or introduce a whole new character altogether. Hopefully it will be the latter; it’ll be tough for anyone to fill Jackson’s moon-walking shoes. That said, if someone has to do it, may we suggest Justin Timberlake?

Would you want to see “Thriller” made into a movie? And who should star? Tell us in the comments!
