what to expect at a commercial casting call or audition

If you have never been to an audition, it can be really nerve racking. I understand how
nervous someone can be on their first audition. It's really scary if you are counting on it,
and you really need the job!

Even though all jobs, auditions, and commercial calls can be different, I will try to go
over what could typically happen. The fact that it is always different, and changes, is
part of what makes this type of profession so darn appealing.

Keep in mind that what makes a commercial audition different than say, a feature film
audition, is that with commercials, you may be 'the face' for their specific product. If
you've seen any of the Progressive commercials, you will notice that they really brand
themselves well with the same girl. When we see her come on, we like her, and she has
a specific character. In fact, there are quite a few different insurance companies that run
their ad campaigns like that. It gives the audience familiarity and trust with the product.
So, the casting agent wouldn't have sent you onto the call if you didn't have a bit of the
look that the specific commercial was looking for. You will need to figure out what sort
of character they are looking for.

When you show up for the audition, you will most likely be in a room with a bunch of
other people. Don't let this freak you out. Sometimes when walking into a room like
that, the whole room will all look up and stare at you when you are walking through
the door. That is pretty typical. The only reason everyone is turning to stare at you
is because they all heard the door open. Also, remember, they are all probably really
nervous too.

Walk up to the front desk, and check in with the secretary. Be polite and friendly.
Remember, you are making an impression as soon as you walk through the door. Don't
ever treat the secretary as if she is some sort of servant. Most likely, he/she is close
friends with the casting director! The secretary will tell you what to do next. Listen
closely, and follow directions.

Most likely, she will tell you to be seated until your name is called. If you are over
prepared, and you don't need any practice, make sure to bring a book with you. If you
feel you need more practice, you can quietly go over the script or what you are planning
in your mind.

When your name is called, and you are ready to perform at your casting call, stand up
confidently, and go into the room. Usually there is a separate room, and many times,
they will put you on camera. You will most likely be doing your audition on camera.
This is so that the director of your audition can go back through and watch the tapes
again. They do this if they are deciding between several people, which can be really
common! Once you get on camera, do your magic, have fun, and nail that commercial
casting call!!!
